Fungus Mungus' Weird Stuff in Japan

A chronicle of general weirdness I've encountered during my stay in Japan.

Let's see...I'm 30-something years old and I value free time above anything tangible. I also value new experiences. That's why I've been teaching English in Japan the past year and a half. Some days are great...and some are really difficult. But every day is interesting.

Traffic Mannquin

The economy still sucks here in Japan. It's even hit the construction sector, where you could always count on the guy waving his glowing wand in a construction zone, signalling cars that it's OK to go now. Here's his replacement:

The interesting thing is how the arms move up and down as if he's doing jumping-jacks, waving the wand in an effort to slow drivers in construction zones.

Here's one that can't do jumping-jacks yet:

He's like the army men I used to have as a kid. The ones who I turned into "casualty victims" by "blowing off" their arms. Only a lot bigger.

Early robot model? ;-)

One day, Japan will be full of such humanoid machines, waving their arms, walking smoothly on the streets, taking care of the hordes of aging people, helping little old ladies across the street...

Not sure if I look forward to it.
